Gyro Bike and Gyro Wheel
Do you remember, back in the days, when you were first learning to ride a bike ? It took some time, lots of falls scraped knees and so on. Although it is a rewarding experience it was not an easy task no matter what anyone says, i only learnt to ride properly with my 3rd bike, the first was a tricycle, second was a small kids bike but had to use training wheels, and finally the bmx was the one that got me moving.
Nowadays you can kick-start your kid's learning curve with a Gyro Bike or a Gyro Wheel on your current bike, the main thing about this is basically a front wheel that balances itself withing a certain extent, help the overall bike-kid balance.
Other Features
12' wheel will cost around 100$ and weights 8lbs
16' and the full Gyro Bike will be available in 2010
Battery is Nickel Metal Hydride and can last 3h in max stability
Has a battery indicator in the wheel that parents should monitor
How does it work?
The key element here is the wheel, as it contains a inner disk that when turned on generates a force called gyroscopic precession that balances the wheel. The stabilization power can be adjusted on the wheel itself, so you can balance out, and reducing it's strength as your kids gets better and better, until eventually you will just turn it of, and use the Gyro Wheel as just a fancy wheel.
The inner disk is powered by battery (NiMH) that can last up to 3h on the maximum stability level, can be charged directly at home in the standard outlet. At the moment only the 12' wheel is available, that should be used for kids with height that ranges from 26' to 44', eventually it will be available a 16' version, and a complete Gyro Bike in the next year.
Final Toughts
So there you have it, why still use training wheels, that really just prevents a fall and doesn't promote the kids balance sense, and makes the whole process takes longer, when you can teach your kid to ride safely in an afternoon with this ?
It is a win win situation, you and your kid will be less stressed with the whole process, you can release your kid a lot sooner, giving him more independence regarding the experience. Just don't forget to teach them how to brake well, because this only helps balancing, doesn't do much to evade a tree or a sharp turn, so don't leave the helmet at home.

No Amazon products foundFrom my research the Gyro Wheel is yet to be on sale at a physical store, but you can already get the 12inch version from amazon, the 16inch version is still on pre-order in the official website, but should be released soon. Also don't forget that since there are no official Gyro Bikes yet, you need to purchase a suitable bicycle also, since the Gyro Wheel is just the balancing wheel.

Where can you buy the gyrobike from?
I am anxiously awaiting the availability of this wheel. My daughter is 10 yrs old and has autism. This has prevented her from successfully riding a bike without training wheels. She is very self consious about this. This wheel will improve her summer life immensely!
Can the Gyro Bike really help a kid learn to balance on a non gyro bike? It doesn't seem possible. I wonder.

I've seen these in action and am amazed every time. The littlest kids -- who I would think should still have training wheels are tooling around like pros! It is awesome! I'd think any parent with kids this age would love to get them feeling comfortable on two wheels so quickly!
